Movement chess
Aim of practice: relationship in space and dramatic situation
Number of participans: 2 (+audience)
Time: 10+ mins
A table is placed in the space, along with two chairs, a tea set (two cups with saucers, two teaspoons, sugar cubes, teapot etc.). The props can be simplified, substituted or varied. The players stand at opposing sides of the table. Their task is to push the chair, sit at the table, pour, sweeten, stir and drink the tea seated in the chair. Similarly to chess, the players can only make one move at a turn. (It’s crucial to draw exact borders in what a move means: 1 push/pull, one picking up of an object, 1 activity etc.). The one, who can first drink the sweetened and stirred tea seated in a chair, wins. The players mustn’t speak or otherwise comment on the game, remaining completely focused.
Practice creates dramatical situations and provokes various kinds of behaviour. Because of that, it is interesting to have a bigger group, when others observe what is playing out on the stage, projecting the story onto the interaction and comment on the process after the game is done.
Note: Can be played in whatever surroundings with any objects, but it is vital to decide the exact rules of the movement beforehand.
